Diliman Prep has partnered up with the Susan Papa Swim Academy to integrate swimming as a built-in feature of the school’s non-academic curriculum. The swimming program is totally implemented by the Aquatic Sports Office at the newly-constructed Diliman Prep-SPSA Aquatics Complex, situated beyond Gym 2.

“Ours is an archipelagic country, and every Filipino is barely 20 minutes away from a body of water such as a lake, the sea, a river. Yet only a small percentage of Filipinos can actually swim,” says Diliman Prep president Nikki Coseteng.

“I believe that every Filipino has the right and the responsibility to learn to swim, if not for his health and wellness, then for his safety. Perhaps then we will have less tragedies as hundreds of people who drown in storm floods, or sea accidents.”

Swimming is considered one of the most comprehensive activity that anyone can do to keep fit, because while swimming, one used practically all of the muscles of the body.

In March 2010, Senator Coseteng was approached by Coach Manny Truellen to encourage the Diliman Prep students to enrol in his summer swimming lessons. But the Senator instead asked him if he would each at Diliman Prep if she constructed her own pool. Of course, he would.

Thus came about the groundbreaking for the pool complex on July 12, 2010 and its subsequent completion in late November. On the same day, the Senator held a press conference to announce the launching of the Swim for All project, an attempt to break the Guinness World Record in Swim Relay, in partnership with the Susan Papa Swim Academy. The event was subsequently renamed The Great Pinoy Peace and Unity Swim. Little did the Senator realize that this would bring her to the forefront of controversies in the swimming community.

The Great Pinoy Peace and Unity Swim failed to meet the world record by only some 300 swimmers. yet it successfully brought together Filipinos from various walks of life, within 24 hours, to bring honor to the country. Read more about The Great Pinoy Peace and Unity Swim on its own website.
